You can also look in a mirror and smile to see the corners of your mouth moving apart. Say the sound that comes out for a few seconds. It should be [iiii], a very long \/i\u02d0\/. You will need to make the vowel \/i\u02d0\/ suitably long in different words depending on how fast you are speaking. If you pronounce [i], your tongue is in the front position, the mouth is open just a little and the lips are spread (you \u201csmile\u201d). Try to begin by saying a long [iii] sound and then only slightly move your tongue towards the central position, open your mouth more and relax the muscles around your lips. This might require some practice. If you overdo the movement of the tongue, jaw and lips, you will end up pronouncing a central vowel such as \/\u025c\u02d0\/ or \/\u0259\/.<\/p>\n\n<p>The vowel \/\u026a\/ can be stressed, but it is often unstressed. In words such as <em>minute<\/em> \/\u02c8m\u026an\u026at\/, <em>missing<\/em> \/\u02c8m\u026as\u026a\u014b\/ or \/\u02c8w\u026am\u026an\/, the first vowel \/\u026a\/ is stressed and the second unstressed. In words such as <em>city<\/em> or <em>pretty<\/em> the unstressed vowel at the end is pronounced [i]. To pronounce \/\u025b\/, place your tongue in the front position as for \/i\u02d0\/, but open your mouth slightly more than you would for the \u201crelaxed\u201d vowel \/\u0259\/. You can start by saying a long [iii] and gradually open your mouth more towards the position for \/\u00e6\/ as you release the \u201csmile\u201d of spread lips. The target sound \/\u025b\/ is about half the distance from \/i\u02d0\/ to \/\u00e6\/. Many European languages contain \/\u025b\/ or a very similar vowel, so perhaps you will not find it difficult to pronounce. Note that unlike the vowel \/\u025c\u02d0\/ (despite similar-looking symbols), \/\u025b\/ is short and front.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The vowel \/\u025b\/ is pronounced in the following places:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>At the beginning of a word: <em>Ed, end, empty, epic, exit, any<\/em>, the names of letters F, L, M, N, S, X<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After a consonant or consonants: <em>let, bed, tend, trend, friend, mess, chess, dress, impress<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often before \/r\/ in various positions:&nbsp;<em>air, airplane, hair, fair, care, spare<\/em> (American English).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Like most short vowels, \/\u025b\/ cannot occur at the end of a word. In foreign words containing \/\u025b\/ or a similar vowel at the end, English speakers often pronounce \/e\u026a\/, as in <em>caf\u00e9<\/em>. If you are used to British English, note that \/\u025br\/ is used instead of \/e\u0259\/, e.g. in&nbsp;<em>air<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The most common errors concerning the pronunciation of \/\u025b\/ include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Pronouncing a close vowel similar to \/\u026a\/, resulting in e.g. <em>pin<\/em> instead of <em>pen<\/em> or <em>rid<\/em> instead of <em>red<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pronouncing the open vowel \/\u00e6\/ instead of \/\u025b\/, particularly in <em>any, many<\/em>, also <em>bad<\/em> instead of <em>bed<\/em> etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saying \/i\u02d0\/ instead of \/\u025b\/ in words with irregular or misleading spelling: the verb <em>read<\/em> in the simple past and past participle forms, the word <em>lead<\/em> meaning \u201cthe chemical element Pb\u201d and the place names <em>Reading, Greenwich, Leicester<\/em> all contain \/\u025b\/, not \/i\u02d0\/.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The aforementioned pronunciation of \/\u025b\/ and \/\u026a\/ in the same or a very similar way is a feature of some regional English dialects, but it is not recommended to English language learners.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"#tableofcontents\">Go back to the table of contents.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vowel5\">How to pronounce \/\u00e6\/<\/h3>\n\n<p>The vowel \/\u00e6\/ is short, open and front, and it requires unrounded lips. In order to pronounce \/\u00e6\/, place your tongue in the front position, open your mouth comfortably wide and do not round or unnaturally spread your lips. You can start by saying \/\u025b\/ and gradually open your mouth wider until you reach the vowel \/\u00e6\/. Make sure you do not raise your tongue, or the vowel will be different. You can compare this vowel to the sound of a crying baby [\u00e6\u00e6\u00e6], but remember not to make it long in actual words.<\/p>\n\n<p>The vowel \/\u00e6\/ often occurs in American English pronunciation where British English uses the long vowel \/\u0251\u02d0\/, e.g. in pass, class, bath, path, dance, France, chance and the contracted modal verb can\u2019t. Numerous other words contain \/\u00e6\/ in both British and American English, e.g. gas, mass, cat, mat, rat, Max, Jack, Paris.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The vowel \/\u00e6\/ is pronounced in the following places:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>At the beginning of a word: <em>apple, ash, atom, Alex, ant<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After one or more consonants: <em>bat, back, sack, spam, crash, pram, track, strap<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Look at the issues that speakers of different languages may have in pronouncing \/\u00e6\/:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Like most short vowels, \/\u00e6\/ is not used at the end of a word, e.g. the words <em>sofa, pasta, panda, Ada<\/em> all have the unstressed vowel \/\u0259\/ at the end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the orthography of your language contains the letter \u201c\u00e6\u201d, note that the English vowel \/\u00e6\/ may be pronounced differently from the sound you associate with this letter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you relax your lips or tongue, you may pronounce \/\u028c\/ instead of \/\u00e6\/, confusing e.g. <em>bad<\/em> and <em>bud<\/em>, <em>lack<\/em> and <em>luck<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you raise your tongue too much, you may pronounce \/\u025b\/ instead of \/\u00e6\/, making <em>bet<\/em> and <em>bat<\/em> sound the same. Thus, when you pronounce \/\u0259\/ on its own, make sure it is never as strong or loud as vowels in stressed syllables. The pronunciation of \/\u0259\/ is simple. You need to relax all the muscles around your lips, place your tongue in a relaxed middle position, and open your mouth about as much as you would for \/\u025b\/. If you look in a mirror, you should see yourself making a face of someone who doesn\u2019t understand something and doesn\u2019t know what to say. English spelling is particularly complex, and \/\u0259\/ can be spelled in several different ways, e.g. \u201ca\u201d as in <em>along, Poland<\/em>, \u201ce\u201d as in <em>enemy<\/em>, \u201ci\u201d as in <em>family<\/em>, \u201co\u201d as in <em>contain<\/em>, \u201cu\u201d as in <em>suggest<\/em>. These are but a few basic examples. Most errors result from pronouncing not \/\u0259\/ but a stressed vowel instead. Like other central vowels, it requires the lips to be neutral, i.e. neither spread nor rounded. To pronounce \/\u028c\/, first relax all the muscles around your lips, place your tongue in a relaxed middle position, and open your mouth wider than you would for \/\u025b\/ but not as wide as for \/\u00e6\/. Your lips should remain relaxed as you do so. Say the sound \/\u028c\/.The description above resembles the one for the \u201cschwa\u201d sound \/\u0259\/, but there are two differences between these two vowels: \/\u028c\/ is more open than \/\u0259\/, and \/\u028c\/ is a full vowel occurring in stressed syllables while \/\u0259\/ is never stressed.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The vowel \/\u028c\/ is pronounced in the following places:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>At the beginning of a word: <em>up, us, under, uncle, ugly<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After one or more consonants: <em>bun, tough, bust, crust, trust<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes in a syllable which does not receive the main stress: at the beginning of <em>undo, unsee, undergo, understand<\/em> (the main stress is on the last syllable).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Look at the issues that speakers of different languages may have in pronouncing \/\u028c\/:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Confusing \/\u028c\/ with the front vowel \/\u00e6\/ can make the pairs <em>luck<\/em> and <em>lack<\/em>, <em>but<\/em> and <em>bat<\/em> sound the same. This problem is related to pronouncing the front vowel [a], which exists in some languages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raising your tongue can result in a vowel similar to \/\u0259\/ or the British \/\u025c\u02d0\/, e.g. pronouncing <em>fun<\/em> and <em>fern<\/em> the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retracting and lowering your tongue can result in a vowel similar to \/\u0251\u02d0\/, thus e.g. <em>cut<\/em> and <em>cart<\/em> can sound almost the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Like most short vowels, \/\u028c\/ should not be used at the end of a word.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Some British dialects do not have \/\u028c\/ at all, using the vowel \/\u028a\/ instead.
